Money saving tips for movers as costs rise 24%

The cost of moving home has soared in the past year, new figures reveal.

According to new data compiled by insurers Admiral the total cost has soared by 24 per cent in a year.

The biggest increase has come in storage - with rates in some areas up by 48 per cent.  These figures are the latest blow for Brits already reeling from the cost of living crisis.

The fact it costs loads more to keep your items in a locked storage room will be particularly hard to bear.

But with many people downsizing to try to save a bit of money, storage can be an attractive option.  Labour costs for removers have increased as have their fuel prices, impacting long distance moves. And as land costs have increased, storage has become more expensive as a result.

 For buyers/sellers:

  • Negotiate with the agents but don’t choose just based on price. Agents will want to charge around 1.5% plus VAT – that’s over £5000 for an average house. Aim for 1% plus VAT that’s a saving of £1680
  • Order your own extras like an EPC or professional photos, agents mark them up
  • Use a good solicitor and don’t simply use the one offered by your agent, they might be on a commission.

For tenants:

  • Do not pay any fees to the landlord or agent, they are not allowed to charge them
  • Finding a property is tough but don’t commit to paying more than you can afford just to secure the right property. Instead, get your application ready with bank statements, personal references and employment information. Carry out a credit check on yourself to avoid wasted applications if there’s something adverse.
  • If a landlord tries to charge more rent because you have a pet, offer an increased deposit instead, you should get this back at the end, unlike the rent.

General:

  • Negotiate with everyone, most providers will drop their costs if you ask nicely
  • Where you can pay with a cashback card. You’ll be paying out big sums. Some cards offer up to 5% cashback initially but be aware many companies might not take card payment.
  • Ask friends or family if you can store items with them rather than paying a depot, just remember insurance may not cover losses.
  • Sell unwanted items before you need to pack them
  • Pack yourself so you only need a basic removal service
  • If you’re able, offer to disassemble furniture and clear the loft for a cheaper moving quote
  • Get moving boxes from the supermarket – fruit boxes are strongest
  • Cancel insurance and read meters as you move out – don’t forget the water meter (usually in the street)
  • Cancel tv and broadband well before you move, many have a notice period so you’ll avoid overpaying.
