Sequence auction house amends advert after watchdog intervenes

One of the country’s largest auction houses has had to amend an advertisement on its website after an intervention by the Advertising Standards Authority.

Barnard Marcus Auctions is part of the Sequence group and is one of the largest residential property auctioneers in the UK, holding a monthly auction in London and periodic events elsewhere in the country.

The ASA says it received a complaint about an auction of land advertised on the company’s own website.

“The complainant challenged whether the ad was misleading as it did not make clear that the land can only be accessed via third party land by foot or agricultural vehicle. The complainant also felt that the ad did not give accurate information about the permitted use of land” a spokeswoman for the authority told Estate Agent Today.

The ASA says it approached Barnard Marcus which responded by assuring the ad would be amended accordingly.

The case was categorised by the ASA as informally resolved.
