The recession has led to a huge surge in tenants abandoning their properties to avoid paying rent, new figures reveal.

The figures, released this week by the Letting Protection Service, show that the number of landlords who are claiming for lost rent soared over the last year.

In January, 1,117 landlords claimed on their insurance for loss of rent after their tenants vanished, compared with just 218 claims in January 2008.
