The first UK property auction to be staged in a cinema was worth an Oscar, says Auction House London.
The event was held at the Everyman Cinema in Belsize Park last week and featured free popcorn for bidders whilst the auctioneer used a clapperboard instead of a gavel.
Auctioneer Andrew Binstock said: “The cinema was packed to capacity with about 250 people squeezed into the auditorium. The free popcorn went down a storm ahead of some crazy bidding on many lots.
“The first property to go under the hammer sold for more than double its guide price of £25,000 at £56,250. This was a ground-floor maisonette in Catford which generated a huge amount of interest.”
Altogether, 21 lots were sold out of 25 offered, a success rate of 84%, raising a total of over £3.6m.
Auction House London will be returning to the Everyman Cinema on April 12.
Meanwhile, Network Auctions is holding its first event in London on March 7 when it will be auctioning lots put forward by its estate agency network.

When are you and your family moving to Japan where you and your 'kids' (that you constantly mention) will be able to buy a property for 50 pence! ;>)
Has an Auction House ever reported a crap sale, funny how the del Boy millions sold is always quoted rather than the millions undersold. Pitty the poor repoe'd borrowers.
In Japan it just would not be.
"...the auctioneer used a clapperboard instead of a gavel."
Just a thought. This WAS an approved substitution, I take it?
Hate to think that all the sales were legally invalid...
