Labour’s Deputy Leader, Angela Rayner is to add the housing brief to her deputy leader role.
She takes over from Lisa Nandy who has been demoted to Shadow Minister for International Development as Keir Starmer shuffled his Front Bench.
It is the second time in two years that Nandy has been demoted. She had been Shadow Foreign Secretary until she was given the job of facing Michael Gove at the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in 2021.
It is believed that Starmer has made the move for two reasons: first, because Nandy has been criticised for being ‘invisible’ in the housing role; and two, because Rayner has been looking for a more public-facing post.
As the next General Election looms, DLUHC Secretary, Gove, is considered a big-hitter within Government ranks and Rayner has a reputation for being a fierce opponent across the Despatch Box.
She will now take on the role of Shadow Levelling Up Secretary as well as Shadow Deputy Prime Minister. Rayner joined the Shadow Cabinet in 2016.
