House of Lords committee set to consider agency regulation

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee has set out the key questions it could ask agency representatives as its inquiry into industry regulation continues today.

Representatives from Propertymark, Trading Standards and The Property Ombudsman (TPO) are set to be questioned by peers today as part of the committee’s inquiry this week into regulation of property agents.

A statement from the committee said possible questions include what are the key challenges in the property agency sector? Would a regulator be able to deal with the challenges in the sector? How easy is it currently for tenants and leaseholders to complain about property agents?

Peers may also ask what a new regulator could look like and are mandatory qualifications needed for agents.

It will start at 1030am with Andrew Bulmer, chief executive of The Property Institute, Luay al-Khatib, director of knowledge and practice at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Timothy Douglas, head of policy and campaigns at Propertymark

At 1130am, it will hear from Martin Boyd, chair at LEASE, Allison Farrar, operations manager at National Trading Standards and Ombudsman and chief executive at TPO Rebecca Marsh.
