Mystery surrounds why estate agency burglary led to police officer's death

Mystery surrounds the motive behind a break-in at an estate and letting agency which ended with a police officer being hit and killed by a stolen car.

During the break-in the alleged burglars stole a red Mitsubishi pick-up which was then pursued by the police at high speed.

The pick-up then allegedly mounted a central reservation in an industrial part of Merseyside where two neighbourhood police officers were standing holding a 'stop' device, aimed at slowing the vehicle.

But the car hit one of the officers - Constable David Phillips - and was then driven off at speed.

Colleagues carried out CPR on the injured officer at the scene of the incident and he was then taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

The agency is believed to have been Oxton Estates on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead.

    Reasons to break in:
    1. Hoping a lettings agency will leave cash on premises (we don't).
    2. Hoping an agency will leave its house key index book exposed with no form of encoding.
    3. To collect AML grade ID for hundreds of people. Why oh why do we have to store such sensitive info for 6 years?
