Decorating with 2014's Key Trends

Need some inspiration when it comes to decorating your new home Try incorporating some of 2014's key trends into your abode, paying attention to colours, textures and prints which are unlikely to go out of fashion once we near the end of the year.

Of course, plenty of aspects of your new home can be swapped and changed fairly easily, too. Think about new cushion covers to fall in line with the fashion trends for the season, along with smaller trinkets like candle holders, vases and even small rugs.

If instead you're opting to overhaul your living room to transform it into something truly unique, consider key pieces in neutral colours. Cheap beds are available online on a next-day basis; why not select one in black, white or cream and your bedroom dcor can easily be changed later Simply add different accessories as your taste and mood changes. You could also select a sofa or dining table in a neutral colour for elsewhere in the house and adapt the smaller pieces within your home to complement them.

Say No to Matching Accessories

Many interior designers and top bloggers will tell you never to play matchy-matchy' when it comes to your dcor. So that means paying attention to which colours and prints complement each other; as soon as you start to match shades and patterns you find yourself getting obsessed. Plus, it's unlikely you'll find exact colour matches anyway. Focus your energy on choosing pieces which work together but don't out and out match. Try natural-looking finishes with industrial pieces for a cool look, or pair traditional furniture with contemporary for transitional' style that's popular with US home owners and becoming increasingly so here in the UK.

Great Style, Low Prices

Achieving your decorating dreams doesn't have to mean you'll be out of pocket. Scour antiques fairs, charity shops and car boots for pieces you can transform with a lick of paint here, and a spot of sanding there. Or why not take a look at high street shops, which often feature collaborations with well-known designers at budget-friendly prices Try Debenhams for a range by Abigail Ahern, for example, for affordable lighting and accessories. In the US, Target has upped the ante by bringing pieces by recognisable faces to the masses at low prices.

Less is More

Sprucing up your home doesn't have to cost the earth, and it doesn't involve buying up the whole home section of your local interiors shop, either. Less is more, according to interior designs focusing on trends for 2014, so make the most of great storage and display minimal trinkets on the top of cabinets or on shelves. Choose statement objects which really complement the space, or add large pieces of art work that will set the room off with little effort and maximum effect. Why not incorporate natural textures into your home, too The shabby chic look is in, and natural pieces made from wood, for example, really tie into the minimalist trend.

A great and informative article Chris. I think it is becoming increasingly important to raise the value of your property when it comes to selling, especially with the housing market at the moment. Although the selling price and asking price are getting closer than ever so it's a chance to really make a smart investment. Do you think that these trends have occurred with the importance of budgeting in mind It's all very minimal and as you said, available in the high street. What's great is that they are easy to follow and apply.
