UK portals down the charts in terms of Facebook likes

A couple of weeks ago, a Brazilian property portal surpassed one million ‘likes’ on Facebook.

This prompted property portal analyst Alistair Helm to see how many likes other property portals had achieved around the world.

In his top 50 chart, Rightmove comes 20th (66,184 likes) and Zoopla 28th (40,270 likes). No other UK portal features.

Both are way behind the two Brazilian portals at the top of the table, followed by the USA’s Zillow with 863,301 likes.

When Helm’s analysis looks at the number of likes per head of population, both Rightmove and Zoopla slip a little, reflecting these crowded shores – to 28th and 38th place respectively.

The Brazilian portals and Zillow all lose their places at the top (to sixth, eighth and 12th place respectively). Instead, portals from Luxembourg, Mauritius and Portugal are in the top three places.

On this measure, the top two portals – both operating in small-population counties of under five million people – engage with 27 out of 1,000 head of population.

So, are our top two portals missing a trick – or is Facebook a bit of an irrelevance?

It is hard to see why consumers would not like Rightmove or Zoopla since both provide a top-class, user-friendly service. Perhaps the Brazilians simply work harder at getting public affection.
