One of the largest and oldest independents in the UK has gone into administration.

Highly respected Barbers Property Agents, founded in 1848, employed 100 staff in seven branches until the market downturn.

Now, four of its offices – in Shrewsbury, Telford, Newport andStafford –  are closing with the loss of 60 jobs after John Kelly and John Lowe of Birmingham firm Begbies Traynor were appointed as administrators last week.

Branches in Whitchurch, Wellington, Market Drayton and the head office in Shrewsbury will remain open for business as usual. The administrators said they were “reasonably confident” of finding a buyer for all of part of the business, not least because the agency has a large rental business.

Kelly said: “Barbers is a long established business which has been affected by the worst financial conditions facing the property sector in over 20 years.”

Barbers Auction, which looks after the livestock market in Market Drayton, is a separate business and unaffected.
