Got a quid to spare?

Then you could buy a home in Kensington.

No, not THAT Kensington. The Kensington we’re talking about is in Liverpool, where the city council is offering homes for just £1.

Buyers must promise to bring them up to a reasonable standard – ie, weatherproof and warm –  and live in them for at least five years, without letting them out.

Currently, the Victorian terraces are boarded up and empty, after the bulldozers moved out. The homes had been compulsorily purchased for up to £70,000 each under John Prescott’s ill-fated Pathfinder scheme.

This was the regeneration scheme which set out to demolish perfectly good communities and replace them with – something else.

The properties, once someone’s home, are clearly not mortgageable, but at £1, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Liverpool City Council deputy mayor Cllr Paul Brant said: “This allows people who may be excluded from mortgages but have construction skills to play a part in the regeneration of their communities.”
