Complaints about estate agents to the Ombudsman have slowed to just 43% of the total proportion, while lettings complaints have gone up by 25%.

The figures, in The Property Ombudsman’s new report covering the period from May 1 to the end of August, show that the split between sales and lettings complaints has changed since the same period a year ago, when 49% of complaints were sales-related and 51% were lettings related.

However, both sales and lettings complaints have declined by number.

During the period of the report, TPO received 1,572 inquiries regarding property sales, a decrease of 14% compared with the same period in 2010, while lettings inquiries showed a decline of 15% (2,724 in 2011 compared with 3,214 in 2010).

These falls come despite a rise in the number of agency branches covered for both sales (11,225 in 2010 and 11,505 in 2011) and lettings (7,669 in 2010 and 8,431 in 2011).

The report shows that 112 cases were upheld in favour of the complainant and 77 went against the complainant. In lettings, more complaints went in favour of the complainant (176) and 76 went against.

The full TPO report can be found at the link below with the case study section at the back making interesting reading for both letting and sales agents.
