A former estate agent has lost his appeal against a six-year jail sentence.
Irish agent Eamonn Kelly, who ran two RE/MAX agencies, had duped investors into buying into sites in the UK, including a bogus property operation in Manchester.
Kelly’s victims included people who were left penniless after handing over their redundancy money.
Kelly began experiencing financial difficulties in 2006 and created a Ponzi-style scam, telling investors they could make a threefold profit. He forged letters from Ulster bank and a legal firm to back up his claims.
Kelly pleaded guilty in January last year at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to a number of sample charges between October 2007 and February 2010 and was sentenced to six years. He subsequently appealed.
However, last week the Court of Criminal Appeal dismissed the appeal, saying the sentence was fair and proportionate.
