Moving home is one of life’s biggest events. And it can be incredibly stressful.

But, with a bit of careful planning and preparation, you can increase your chances of everything passing off without a hitch.

Below, using our experience as Stoke Newington’s number one estate and letting agent, we outline some of the steps to follow to ensure a hassle-free move.

Work out your strategy

First things first, you need to decide whether to take a DIY approach to moving home or whether to call in the professionals.

If you don’t have a great deal of stuff, the former option may be more sensible. But it’s important to get the right-sized van – too big and you’ll be left with a load of unnecessary space; too small and you’ll have to make more than one trip back and forth.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to move things off your own back, then hiring the services of a removals firm is the way to go. To give yourself peace of mind that they are a reputable company, ensure that they are a member of the British Association of Removers (BAR). That way you know you won’t be getting any cowboys or a firm that doesn’t turn up when they say they will. Also, to be on the safe side, book them in at least two weeks in advance.

Get on top of your packing

It might be something that you are dreading and putting off for as long as possible, but packing needn’t be a painful, frustrating and endless task. It can, if you do it right and give yourself plenty of time, actually be quite a therapeutic experience.

Heavy-duty cardboard boxes and bubble wrap will keep those valuable items safe, while it’s also a good idea to label boxes so there is no confusion when you move into your new home.

Keeping things structured will ensure you leave nothing behind and will also ensure that you don’t procrastinate or get distracted by other things.

The most important piece of advice when it comes to packing is this: start early. It will take longer than you think. And, as we all know, last-minute packing isn’t exactly laugh-a-minute stuff.

Keep a checklist

A make-it-up-as-you-go-along, everything-will-turn-out-fine approach to moving home is not going to work out well. Even if you’re not a naturally organised and disciplined person, you will need to make special exception when it comes to the moving process.

One thing that can help to keep things in order is the humble checklist – it will be a lifesaver in those manic few days before you move out.

Draw up a list of all the things you need to do and simply tick these things off, one by one, as you do them. It will help with packing, it will help to keep your stress levels to a minimum, and it will help you to complete all the little jobs you need to do in a calm and measured way.

Clear out the junk

You might have had certain items clogging up your loft, your spare room or your garage for many years now. Well, moving house is the perfect time to declutter and get rid of those unwanted items.

Depending on their condition and usability, you could throw them in the bin, hand them over to a charity shop or sell them on online auction sites such as eBay.
