I think it comes down to offering a transparent service. Customers need to perceive that they get value for money and the fees charged need to be justified. Estate agents, on or offline, need to offer a clear menu/ breakdown of their services and let customers pick and choose the features that they want. We all know pricing and presentation are key, throw in 'local knowledge' and you have all the ingredients for selling. It's local knowledge where the High St really scores. As for online, those in the market need deep pockets for offline promotion and online google ads, or a very good SEO strategy. Having spoken to most of the online market leaders in terms last 6 months I'm amazed at just how little they know about online marketing and the commitment required to make their online offering work cost effectively. They're all hell bent on traditional marketing and Google ads and whilstever they've deep pockets, one or two may just get the lastminute.com brand awareness.
