The over-50s could make the best estate agents, an industry training platform has claimed.
It comes as the Treasury unveiled plans for apprenticeships aimed at the over-50s in this week’s spring Budget, known as ‘returnerships.’
Charlotte Jeffrey-Campbell, director of The Able Agent, said: “The new 'returnerships' - apprenticeships targeted at the over 50s - could be extremely positive for the industry, as well as those looking to forge a new career in it.
“Given the skills that they have to offer, the over 50s will likely make some of the best estate agents, they are experienced having probably moved a number of times, possess life skills and have the ability to show real empathy when required. It could be a win-win.”
‘Returnerships’ will be targeted at the over-50s, bringing together the Government’s existing skills programmes focusing on flexibility and previous experience to reduce training length.
They will promote accelerated apprenticeships, sector-based work academy programme placements and skills bootcamps to the over-50s.
This will be supported by £63m for an additional 8,000 skills bootcamp places in 2024-25 in England, and 40,000 new sector-based work academy programme placements across 2023-24 and 2024-25 in England and Scotland.
The Treasury said: “This will support better access to re-training and allow workers of all ages to engage with the opportunities of a second career.”

I retired as an estate agent at 54 in 2019....... loving it but admit to be a bit bored and would consider something back in the industry.......but, why would I when I will get clobbered for Tax, why would anyone?
Anyone who is over 50 and not worked, would have other investments or incomes that are taxed.....if the country is short of employees and are obviously encouraging open door immigration then there needs to be a great incentive!!

I am 50 and have 30 years of successful sales experience but having not worked since the pandemic (was made redundant and have taken some time out), I’m finding the roles available unattractive due to the hours required. The best thing the govt could do is incentivise employers to recruit 50+ in some way (because there’s definitely an ageist element to recruiting), and also support business to offer part time roles because many of us over 50 don’t want or need to work full time / weekends etc but could add a lot of value to businesses for 3-4 days per week.

The over 50's need incentivizing in reduced monthly taxes if they want them to return to work as after tax its really not worth it.
