An estate agent has been forced to apologise after telling people Manchester cathedral was due to be turned into flats for an April Fools joke.

A public relations officer acting for Tiger Property Partners posted on Twitter and Facebook - apparently without Tiger's knowledge - that the cathedral was going to become 15 luxury apartments, with the estate agent now taking deposits for off-plan sales.

The cathedral, Tiger and the Manchester Evening News had around 100 calls, mostly complaining about the 'change of use'

The MEN reports that the freelance PR consultant was instructed by Tiger to run its social media accounts. The posts have now been deleted and the company has now apologised for any distress the post caused - although it has also admitted that it had also received enquiries about the asking prices of the 'new flats'.

A spokeswoman for Tiger Property Partners has told the media: We are sorry for any distress caused to people who thought the cathedral was for sale. Maybe it was not as obvious as an April Fool to people not in property circles."

This news story proves that common sense is not so common after all

Result for estate agent, they got free PR with Manchester Evening News and Estate Agent Today Result surely No

Any publicity is good publicity, and you would have thought that such an innocent April fools joke can be forgiven.

Well, that went down like a lead balloon. Seems a bit over-the-top for them to be forced to apologise, but it was a pretty lame attempt at an April Fools' joke. And, in this day and age, it's probably not beyond the realms of possibility that a cathedral would be put up for sale and converted into houses, especially when that news comes from an estate agent.

Bit silly all round, to be honest.
