Britain’s biggest supermarket is to go into house building, and plans to develop four ‘mini-villages’ centred around Tesco stores in the South-East.

As newspapers have pointed out, customers can already buy a home through Tesco’s estate agent partnership with Spicerhaart, and take out a mortgage through its banking arm.

The supermarket plans to build the developments in Bromley-by-Bow (400 homes), Dartford (1,000), Streatham (200 plus a bus depot) and Woolwich (900), in addition to some developments in Ipswich and north-east England.

Critics have warned that Tesco could end up dominating the UK economy. But others have suggested that if Tesco’s bosses actually ran the economy, the country might not be in the mess it now is.

Perhaps not the full picture? When they reveal who they are in bed with perhaps the locations will be logical rather than a north-south divide, must have a partner??? Lets see if they are better than Haarts.

Will Tescos become the new Barratts with colour co-ordinated helicopter? Lets hope the houses are not flimsy and are built to last. The mini villages to be eco friendly may need associated windfarms, so can we see Tesco expanding into this area also?

Is that lazy journalism or just another example of Southern kn*bs not knowing that there are actual towns and cities north of the Watford gap?

I wonder if the section 106 is applied for social Housing, Tesco will paint those units in blue and white stripes? Joking aside - I think its all credit to Tesco. Not enough new homes are being built so I have no complaints. I sincerely wished they did run the economy - imaging the clubcard points on my Tax Bill!!
