Agents are reminded to be on their guard when approached by publishers of items such as wall charts and calendars.

The publishers often say that these products will be widely circulated in the local community and will promote good causes. However, agents should check out such claims before parting with any money.

This follows the case of a publisher which took £1m from 5,000 local businesses in three years, claiming to publish 250,000 copies of ‘awareness’ booklets on subjects such as road safety and fire prevention.

In fact, only 6,500 copies of one booklet were printed.

Rose Garland, based in Heywood, Lancashire, has now been wound up.

I agree with Yorkshireman. I also in my time have seen a disproportionate number of "Sales Executives" claiming to come from this part of Lancashire, selling "free" wall charts, "free" maps, folders, Golfing score cards, Rugby fixture lists, either supported by fellow local traders who get very sour when they realise that they have been "ripped off" or in aid of local very ill children, or less offensive, in aid of schools etc, etc.
My concern is these sweet talking executives will no doubt appear again under a different name, so as a policy, I NEVER agree to participate in any of their "free ideas!" If we all did that, these guys would (hopefully) do an honest day's work!

Ah, but there aren't any crows in Heywood - the locals ate them all.

I've been in this profession for 45 years and there's nothing new in this. Before I got to the bottom of the article I would have bet my boots that the scammers would be from Lancashire. Over the years I've been approached by such companies dozens of times and they were always from St. Annes on Sea or Blackpool. This time it's Heywood. Not far as the crow flies!
