The number of people who are in arrears with their rent or mortgage is now 1.4m, while the number of those struggling to meet their monthly payments has risen by 44% to stand at 7.8m.

The numbers were revealed in a YouGov survey for Shelter, which also showed that nearly one million people in the last year have used a payday loan to help pay their rent or mortgage.

A further 2.9m used an unauthorised overdraft to help pay their rent or mortgage, and of those, 10% did so every month.

Shelter "you have made your bed" so do not complain.
