London Mayor Boris Johnson has launched a new property portal.

It is aimed at people in London looking for somewhere affordable to buy or rent.

The new First Steps portal, described as similar to Rightmove and Zoopla, will be run by Sharetobuy.com which was originally a mortgage broker.

Each property on the new site is listed with clear affordability information, including the deposit required and repayments.

The site provides a direct link between first-time buyers and affordable home ownership schemes developed through the Mayor’s First Steps programme.

The venture, a relaunch of an earlier First Steps portal, will be delivered at no cost to the public purse.

James Cartlidge, founder and director of Sharetobuy.com, said: “At Share to buy, we are passionate about the challenge of making housing affordable and are delighted to have been invited by the Mayor of London to take over the running of his First Steps property portal.

“Products like shared ownership can appear complex, and our aim is to break down barriers of understanding by utilising robust affordability information in every property we display on the portal.”

Share to buy started out as mortgage brokers focused on affordable home ownership but in November 2010 diversified by launching a property portal dedicated to shared ownership schemes.

The portal quickly went from strength to strength, providing leads for affordable housing providers not just in London but across England, utilising the firm’s specialist mortgage knowledge to incorporate affordability tools that help customers understand the likely costs of buying a part-buy part-rent home.

Why call it Sharetobuy.com when the domain Scamtobuy.com was available?

    :S

Shared ownership is a rip off to push house prices high, what a joke. Yet they have the nerve to call it affordable housing when you only own a fraction and have huge other costs on top. Not to mention no one will want to buy it off you either.

How can we make homes affordable....ok we can make make and sel/rent lower priced houses.

    Who said that......shoot them.....

Right OK I have cunning plan, If people can't afford a whole property we can sell them a bit of one bit of one, then we have them locked in to the pyramid scheme...I mean property ladder hahahaha in evil laugh

Thank you for your facilitation of this Boris, now mates in the big building Industry can continue to make a nice profit and the banks asset books still look good.

The problem is even the affordable bit looks unaffordable to many of the young people in this country. Thats why you were completely stumped on Question time the other day when you were asked "who these homes were affordable to?"

You can't make this up.........wait a minute, someone has.

The background image on their homepage (Tower Bridge) has been flipped.

If they do that on the homepage, cue lots of dodgy pictures of houses and flats in the listings!

I think I'm bored of the word passionate - it has lost all meaning because everyone uses it all the time about random b*llocks.

How about fervent, ardent, zealous, avid, obsessive, fanatical, compulsive, fixated, infatuated, besotted, smitten.

(look who swallowed a thesaurus this morning)

You are not "passionate the challenge of making housing affordable" - because making a website that lists property with an affordability rating does no such thing. What it does do is allow you to make money - I can believe that you might be passionate, fervent, ardent & zealous about that...

There are several (very hard) ways to make housing cheaper, but a website isn't one of them.
