Estate agents in Shaw, Oldham, where a gas explosion killed a young child and wrecked several homes, have led fundraising in aid of the victims.

Your Move staff have so far raised nearly £2,000 towards a disaster fund created to support those affected by the tragedy.

The fundraising, led by sales negotiator Danielle Hughes, who has close ties with Shaw, and supported by branch manager Daryl Atkinson and his team, began on the day of the explosion and soon resulted in Your Move being the focal point for community support.

The branch has also organised donations and distribution of clothing, food and toys. Sixty bags of items have been donated and handed out by staff.

In addition, the team has been instrumental in finding accommodation for those affected by working with the local council, landlords and other agents in the village.

In all they supported two families who needed immediate rehousing and four others in need of a six-month contract. A further 15 were also supported in finding short-term rental accommodation.

Daryl Atkinson said: “We have been bowled over by the response to our appeal which has successfully brought businesses and local people together.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support, including fellow agents, the local council and of course Your Move management who have been behind us all the way.

“Special thanks too must go to the Estate Agency Foundation who generously gave a donation towards the fund for which we – and those affected by this tragedy – are truly grateful.”

Vikki Girton of the EAF commented: “The EAF brings together estate agents from across the UK in raising funds to support those in difficult situations and who are in danger of becoming homeless. We saw this as a perfect opportunity to apply funds raised by our members to a very worthwhile cause.”

Sincere thanks to people like these who step forward to try to help.

You have my admiration, and I hope that the publicity brings both the cause and the individuals concerened well-deserved rewards.
