There was a fall in the number of lots offered at auction last month and in the amounts raised, according to the Essential Information Group, which also said 73% of lots sold.

Overall lots offered in March 2009 were 2,538 (compared with 3,273 in March last year), while the amount raised was £247m compared with £400m.

The decline in prices compares with March 2007, when a similar number of lots (3,153) were sold as in March 2008, but the amount raised was £669m.

The decline in lots offered and amount raised was similar in both residential and commercial sectors, at 22% down on lots offered and around 40% down for amounts raised.
