Shock and horror! A national property journalist has written an article in praise of local estate agents.

So, well done to the prolific Graham Norwood for naming, and for once not shaming, but rather shining a light on his personal top 20 in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph.

He looked purely at local independents, not at chains, and while it isn’t obvious where he got some of his criteria (awards? good PR?), it was also clear that some of those he has actually met, and others got into the top 20 on the strength of recommendation.

It is also very good to see him recognise that agents generally perform a great service, often sponsoring local good causes.

The top 20 are: Douglas & Gordon, London; Finders Keepers, Oxfordshire; Streets Head, Surrey; Mobility Friendly Homes, national; Georgian Property, national; Bedfords, East Anglia; Dacre, Son & Hartley, Yorkshire; PDQ Property, Cornwall; East of Exe, Devon; WA Ellis, London; Haus Properties, London; Unique, London; College & County, Oxford; Killens, Somerset; House-Hut, Bristol, Bath and Cheshire; Williams & Goodwin The Property People, Wales; Martyn Gerrard, London; Grantley, Surrey; Hayes Sales & Lettings, Herefordshire; and Ralph Bending, Glastonbury.

Obviously any list that includes whacky Ralph ‘proud to have been banned by Rightmove’ Bending can’t be bad.

We also like the fact that Lucy Morton of WA Ellis is hailed as London’s queen of lettings (quite right too, although we reckon there are at least three serious contenders to the title), and any reference to Ed Mead’s exciting leather motorbike gear as he turns up to work at Douglas & Gordon is always bound to cheer us up on a Monday morning (EAT speaks for herself here).

We also like the fact that Martyn Gerrard has made it on to the list, despite (or maybe because of) its TV bashing by Mary Portas.

Still, a number of EAT’s favourites aren’t there. And perhaps you think there are some omissions too?
