Could EAT have your help please?

The sadly-lamented Estate Agency News performed a particularly useful service to the industry.

And no, we’re not talking about its “You are Chalkie White, give me £1” feature, or even the must-read Plain Talking Paul Smith column (ah yes, the man who didn’t like the Tesco ‘every little helps’ proposition, but obviously that was then).

Or, for that matter, its City columnist (come back, Mike Goodman, all is forgiven, even by Rightmove), the ever-switched on Bob North (ditto) or the encyclopaedic David Perkins.

No, we’re talking about its Top 50 league of agents.

EAN used to publish this at the start of each year and it was regarded as highly authoritative. It was so well done that we stood back respectfully in awe.

However, the last Top 50 was issued at the start of 2009 and, unfortunately, it does seem that EAN has bowed out of the game, as we note its last story was something to do with someone called Alistair Darling. Who?

Anyway, we think it’s EAT’s public duty to take up the baton and produce a definitive list of the top agents in the UK.

In 2009, agents with 12 or more offices made it into the EAN Top 50.

If we start from this, please could agents with 12 or more offices please contact EAT’s editor (rosalind.renshaw@gmail.com) by email with the word ‘league’ in the title, and in return we will send you an email questionnaire which will take you all of one minute to complete.

We promise you this has nothing to do with marketing, but the end result would be incredibly useful as an industry resource.

More in suspended animation, and not really kicking at the moment, but where there's life etc - and take that from someone who really does know!

Grow up Ray, don't just post negatives, pointless- what harm can a simple leagure tablke of the biggest agents do?
Roz take little notice of silly people, doing a great job.

I really don't know why people are kicking up such a stink about this, the league table used to be about the Top 50 biggest Estate Agents based on offices . its certainly not the be all and end all of what makes a good company but its still a valuable tool. I agree its well over due a return Ros

This is a good idea, and it was easily the best thing in EAN. For the detractors, it has nothing to do with measuring quality or performance. It's just about whether the bigger industry players have contracted or expanded in the space of a year – so it tells you about the general direction of the industry. It's really useful as you can spot which of your competitors is doing well compared with the rest and which isn't. We know so little about our own industry that I for one really welcome this.

With all this snow around, why don't we have a competition to see which agent can pee the furthest? We would need photographic evidence of course.

No need to bother - I am "the best estate agent" :-)

    or is that "Spartacus"????

    anyway - a daft idea

Great idea Ros and I'm sure you can work out the correct wording to keep everyone happy. What would also be great though is if you could publish Comscore and Hitwise figures each month for each of the portals, as an honest and independent view would be much more help than waiting for each of them to be selective in their stats.

    Just what is the point?

Obviously, size DOES matter!! I really don't see how the Corporates with a multi-office presence are nesessarily better agents. In fact, our customer feedback says just the opposite. In my experience the larger the company the worse the customer service becomes, no matter what industry they represent. BT, British Gas et al - take a bow.

Questionnaires already being requested and some already returned. I can clarify that the survey is simply to establish the UK's largest 50 agents, and to measure whether they have grown or shrunk in the last year. I am sorry that the word 'top' has proved a distraction – I'll remove it in future stories and simply call it a League of Agents. I stuck to 12 offices as the base point because this is where the last EAN survey started.

Didn't Paul Smith once publicly admit in his column that his company didn't commission HIPs until the property was sold? Durrrr.

'Ever switched' on Bob North? Hardly - he knows nothing about the internet- his column was a joke!

    Top 50 for What???

    Ok, thanks Ben.

My point is that in order to be a top Estate Agency it doesn't mean you have to have 12 offices.... 12 Offices shouldn't really be the magic number for providing good service, exceptional knowledge, great results etc etc!

Please explain EAT as I feel as though you would need to justify this, not just copy a number that has been used before.

an excuse for those who weald power and influence to name themselves as the best agents, hardly democratic.

Nice article, RIP Estate Agency News

Great idea - It's an excellent resource for suppliers too

Mark - The point is it's unlikely you would be in the Top 50 if you have less than 12 offices

Sorry... Am I missing something? Why is it only for Agents with 12 or more offices!?
