A tenant sent dog muck, dead moths, nettles and a dead bird to his letting agent when he was threatened with eviction.

Mark Coleman, 47, sent four packages to Don Scott, owner of Home-Start estate agents, in Hanley, and also poured blue paint at the shop and put up offensive homophobic posters.

North Staffordshire magistrates heard that Coleman and his wife were sent a notice on June 2 telling them they were being evicted from their home in Kidsgrove because they had not paid the rent.

But the court heard that Coleman was at the end of his tether because nothing had been done to fix problems he had been having with the house since 2005.

Coleman admitted the offences when he was arrested by police, and pleaded guilty to harassment.

Peter Howland, mitigating, said Coleman and his wife had moved into his rented property in 2002 and had repeatedly complained about the boiler, hot water tank and gas fire but nothing was done.

Coleman was handed a 12-month community order by the magistrates, with a 12-month supervision requirement.

Morecoffeeplz: I couldn't agree with you more. I could have picked a handful of phrases which would have raised even more of a "fnar, fnar" - but that was not my point. There are an element of posters on here who simply appear to wish ill on Estate Agents. That is basically what I was trying to establish - whether 'sussex' (who I cannot remember seeing posting here before hence my suspicion...) simply thought that seeing the phrase "dog poo" on a site like this to be humourous - or was one of the latter breed of morons.

These actions are not pleasant, but suggest sosmeone is acting out of pure frustration. I don't imagine it was a case of the appliances not being fixed over night, so he sent some dock muck over. These events must build up collectively other a long period of time to cause any rational human being to act in this way. You can't make judgment on such little detail, such as this article. However, I wonder how far the letting agent actually went to work WITH the landlord to get the property in an acceptable living condition?

Dan, you obviously don't work in the lettings industry or you'd know its the landlord who has to authorise and fund repairs - therefore its highly unlikely the agent was to blame. Durr.
Alternatively if the property had been in a dangerous state then the Environmental Health could have taken action under HHSRS. One thing's for sure, its certainly not up to the letting agent to pay for works out of his own pocket as Dan seems to think.
As for the gas appliances they could be "not working properly" or even not working at all but still be perfectly safe, certified as such on the Gas Safety Record and therefore legal.

sussex: Please explain what it is you find funny - and why?

If it is the use of the phrase "dug muck" then what would you have preferred to see in its' place?

If on the other hand you think it is at all "funny" that this person did what he did, then that is a completely different response you will get from the majority on here...

The moral of the storey is home-start do nothing for their tenants!! and what kind of punishment will he get for his failings?..GAS boiler and gas fire not working properly, could also kill the tenants, then Mr Scott would be up on a manslaughter charge!! doesnt bare thinking about when it comes to peoples safety really..It isnt difficult just to do their job, I manage to look after all my clients property problems, happy tenants mean rents on time...simples.....and no Dog Poo in my inbox..
