An upmarket law firm which told its staff not to dress as though they were estate agents from Chelmsford has failed to upset estate agents from Chelmsford.
It did, however, upset itself.
A dress code blog on Berwin Leighton Paisner’s staff website has since been removed after it told female employees not to wear red bras or knickers with a visible pantie line.
Men were told to steer clear of black suits, skinny ties, and coloured shirts with white collars.
The blog told staff: “You are not an estate agent from Chelmsford.”
In Chelmsford, estate agent Russell Quirk said: “When I saw this, I laughed my loafers off.
“I personally take great care in ensuring that my appearance meets the estate agency stereotype as much as possible. In fact the office washroom at eMoov towers is festooned with industrial tubs of hair gel and our cloakroom could double as a wardrobe for TOWIE. All pointy shoes, sunglasses and tight, shiny suits from Top Man. An’ that ... ;)
“But it seems that it’s a close run thing really in terms of the sartorial crimes committed by us Essex property bods versus those high-flying City lawyers. Which must be why some well intentioned legal ‘Gok Wan’ has found it necessary to provide such advice to their contemporaries.
