The Office of Fair Trading has given its approval the Surveyors Ombudsman Service to run an estate agent redress scheme.

From October, the Surveyors Ombudsman Service will deal with complaints made against chartered surveying firms offering estate agency services.

From October onwards, all estate agents must belong to a recognised redress scheme.

The Surveyors Ombudsman Service, understood to be far less used than the Ombudsman for Estate Agents scheme, is only the second ombudsman scheme to receive OFT approval.

There has been no OFT announcement on a third scheme which also applied for approval under the new consumers redress and estate agency legislation.
