Congratulations to Martin Payne, who has just celebrated 40 years with Connell Estate Agents.

Payne, who is based in Luton, is Connells’ longest-serving member of staff.

He joined the company in 1969 as a trainee sales negotiator in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, the year that the company’s founder Larry Connell sold the business. At that time the company had 11 branches – now it has over 460.

At 23, Payne became Connells’ youngest manager and he has consistently been one of their top performers. His current role is senior land director.

    And still going strong Martin.
I started with connells St. Albans in 1993, not quite a veteran yet. But if there are any old school ex connells staff out there who have any old pictures of the St. Albans branch or just want to share any stories, I have a keen ear and it's nice to recall good memories.
20 years on and the ethos intensifies every year.

Stuart Flavell only took 32 years to get anywhere.

I am now 77. I went to work with Larry Connell as an office boy in George Street West, Luton in 1947. ( a second office was opened in that year?).I used to have to go out and buy his favourite cigarettes 'Passing Cloud' - he gave me two each time!
His secretary was a Miss Bashford and the surveyor was a Mr Barnes who drove an 'Armstrong Siddley'. While I was there Mr Connell bought 'Delaport' as his home. Does this make me the longest surviving ex-employee from 62 years ago! Incidently the firm was known as Connell & Silkstone in 1946.
