A high percentage of tenants are living in rental properties that have no gas safety certificates.

A survey of 1,036 tenants who had been living in their properties for more than a year found that 36% had out-of-date certificates, whilst 26% of tenants had never been given a gas safety certificate in the first place.

Landlords are legally required to have annual gas safety checks on their properties and to provide tenants with copies of the certificates. They must use engineers on the Gas Safe Register, the body that replaced CORGI a year ago.

The survey was carried out earlier this month by a flat share website, Spareroom.

Director Matt Hutchinson blamed ‘amateur’ landlords who did not know the law and often advertised in local newspapers rather than going through a letting agent.

In times of hardship, there will be landlords who flout the law. The major political party who intend to increase the number of prison places in their manifesto, may suitably address this undesirable situation.
