A new standards board has been launched for the surveying community.

It will regulate the Home Condition Survey and develop associated products.

The Property Surveyors Standards Board is the result of a joint venture by three industry bodies – SAVA (Surveyor and Valuers Accreditation), BRE (the Building Research Establishment) and the RPSA (the Residential Property Surveyors Association).

The HCS claims to be a detailed and objective residential property survey that offers home buyers a comprehensive yet simple to understand report on the condition of the property they plan to purchase.

@Syd - the Home Condition Report and the Home Condition Survey are essentially the same as far as I can tell but with the former done on behalf of a property owner and the latter done on behalf of a purchaser.

A minor distinction, but with some important differences in the report at the end.

The report is both dumbed down for normal people (Red/ Amber/ Green descriptions for severity) and detailed at the same time. It's actually really sensible and will help a buyer who knows little about the non-surface problems that crop up.

With so many different routes to the same result, it is probably sensible to have a few checks and balances in place to oversee it.

That said of course, it is just jobs for the boys and extra hoops for everyone to jump through.

So let's get the straight. There's now :

    Home Condition Survey (as above)
    Home Condition Report (RICS)
    The HomeBuyer Report
The Single Survey for Scotland's Home Report

No wonder there's confusion for buyers
