There are two million people on housing waiting lists – and yet one million properties are lying empty.

This, along with landlords from hell, is one of the issues being aired in Channel 4’s new ‘Great British Property Scandal’ season which starts tonight.

You may want to watch from behind the sofa.

Agents aren’t mentioned in any of the publicity blurb, but it’s entirely possible that the omission will be put right.

If 2,000,000 are on a wait list, does that mean they are waiting to rent? Shall we assume they are living somewhere while they are waiting on the list? Are the people on the list willing to pay market rents so a landlord can afford to rent a property to those waiting?

Is housing somehow different in terms of ownership? People have many things they are 'not using' and there is no movement to force them to make the unused property available to anyone who wants to use it. Does the desire to have something translate into it can be taken?
