Property analyst firm Hometrack is forecasting that by 2014, more people will own their homes outright than have a mortgage.
Hometrack has analysed information which it believes the Government will release this autumn following the latest census.
It expects it to say that the growth in outright home ownership has been such that 47% already own their homes without a mortgage.
Hometrack is also expecting the forthcoming census results to concentrate on the rapid growth in the private rented sector, and the growing imbalance between larger and smaller homes.
It says that three- and four-bed family houses account for 63% of private supply, while two-bed properties represent just 18% of private housing supply.
The 2011 census will be the first to capture data on housing by bedroom count.
