In a survey of ARLA members, over three-quarters (76%) reported that estate agents in their local area have moved into lettings in the last six months.

ARLA claimed it is likely that a high proportion of these are offering a sub-standard service, with many not being conversant with the 100-plus pieces of legislation that relate to the private rental sector.

ARLA is launching a licensing scheme for its own members on May 5, ahead of a possible mandatory Government scheme which could follow a recommendation made in the Rugg Report. The Report also recommended that all private landlords be licensed.

The latest Ombudsman for Estate Agents report also noted a 200% rise in lettings disputes.

You see this news is something we have know for a while now. The facts are not really anygood as ARLA has only 3000 members! So ist not really a great stat to go buy.

As for agents trying to make a quick buck of rentals. I think they will find the rewards are not huge unless you let properties properly, and that includes following all legislation and dedicating time and effort into each let.

Ray..I would like to think that any NAEA member offices who are also dealing in rental property will be able to transfer the moral and professional attributes associated with being a MNAEA to all things rental! This is clearly designed to wead out those wishing to make a quick buck on the back of rentals and most NAEA members would therefore, I hope, not be classed in this group.

Well.....is the Federation going to support its ARLA Division and advise its NAEA Division that if their offices do not have ARLA qualified members in office they should not offer this sub-standard service?
