Tax changes for owners of holiday homes have been abolished at the last moment, within hours of the announcement of the general election.

Various tax reliefs were to have been withdrawn, amid warnings that this would drive many holiday let landlords out of business and damage the UK tourist and holiday industry.

The measure was part of the ‘wash-up’ process by which certain legislation goes through between the calling of an election and the dissolution of Parliament.

However, in the Government’s race to finalise the Finance Act ahead of Parliament dissolving, shadow chancellor George Osborne refused to endorse the repeal of tax reliefs for holiday home owners, forcing the Government to retract the change, at least until the outcome of the election.

Ross Elder, managing director of the website holidaylettings, said it had been an extraordinary reprieve for self-catering tourism, local economies and livelihoods
