Spare a thought for EAT publisher Nat Daniels as we try to keep him on his toes.

We admit – we weren’t terribly impressed when he ran the London Marathon and took an hour longer than his wife, the lovely Tania, to get to the finishing line.

And when he blamed his knee – well, we thought, what a wuss! You know: men, colds and man flu.

EAT’s thought-leader told us he suspected he had developed the knee problem because of an old squash injury to his big toe three years ago.

What a pathetic excuse, we said. Just because you were beaten by your wife!

So we had to eat humble pie when an X-ray revealed he had been walking around all this time with a broken toe.

On Friday, his toe underwent surgery.

Well, it’s only a toe. But we hope Nat is soon walking tall again.

(For those who have never met Nat, he is officially the world’s tallest man and is in the Guiness Book of Records at 12ft 9in, and still growing at an average 1.403 inches a year, which is itself a record. So he probably does need his toes. It is probably also the reason why he soon cheered up after his operation with a meal that was meant to feed the entire ward.)

Nat - you know I wouldn't be able to resist a comment. Looks as though you're a paid up member of BUPA with the size and quality of the breakfast. Or is it posher than that as I've never seen you so well dressed - good choice, it really suits you.
