A Yorkshire estate agent is to be the next president of the MCC.

Philip Hodson, director of Hodsons estate agents in Wakefield and also chief executive of insurance company Oval, will take over from current MCC president Christopher Martin-Jenkins, who nominated Hodson for the role.

Despite Yorkshire’s glittering history in the sport, the former Wakefield Cricket Club player will become only the fourth Yorkshireman to be MCC president, and the first from Wakefield.

Hodson described the accolade as a shock and a “very great honour”. He says Geoffrey Boycott was the first person to ring and congratulate him.

He has been involved with MCC for 34 years, when he played his first qualifying games for the club, hitting a century in his second match. He went on to play some 300 games for the MCC.

He became a Players and Fixtures sub-committee member in 1987, and went on to become chairman in 1993 before joining the main committee in 2000.

His new role at Lord’s will last for a year and the role involves overseeing the development of youth cricket and taking the game to different countries, as well as guarding the laws of the game.

Hodsons estate agents specialises in upmarket properties and also has a lettings arm which is an ARLA member.
