An estate agent has been jailed for five years after he was convicted on three counts of arson.

James Starr, 32, of Reading, Berkshire, had denied starting two fires in February 2008 at an underground car park and a third fire on the same night in another car park.

Judge Peter Ross sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment on each of the first two counts and three years on the third, to run concurrently.

Among the cars damaged in the fires were a £36,000 BMW and a £24,000 Audi convertible as well as a Lexus, a Renault Laguna, a Toyota Corolla, a Vauxhall Corsa and a Honda Integra.

The case came to trial three times before Starr was convicted.

The first collapsed because the jury could not come to a verdict and the second was halted when a new jury had to be sworn in.
