As a sign of the times, can we now expect more portals to announce when agents have renewed their contracts?

Until now, we have not seen this phenomenon (big wins, big fanfare, yes, but not renewals). However, this week, the Digital Property Group, which includes Primelocation and FindaProperty in its stable of portals, sent out a press release saying that Cluttons is renewing its advertising contract “after ongoing negotiations”.

It goes on: “This latest agreement shows that the Digital Property Group continues to gain ground on the market leader, Rightmove, as it firmly establishes its position as the second largest property portal offering,” says the announcement.

So the portal wars continue, but we’d love to have been a fly on the wall during those ongoing negotiations which presumably centred around cost and the fact that Cluttons was one of the original shareholders of Primelocation and therefore no longer contractually bound to advertise on it after next month.

Meanwhile, Henry Pryor’s Estate Agency Buying Group – which is aiming to cut subscription rates to portals by using bulk purchasing power negotiation – is continuing to grow. Pryor says it was mentioned in the last Friday email to NAEA members and that his site at www.eabg.co.uk received 500 hits after being mentioned in a news report last week on Estate Agent Today.

No one appears to be discussing any particular topic. Can none of you debate without raising the rightmove issue again and again? We are all competitors on the high street but here we are mere mortals in the same industry so why is there so much back stabbing, gloating and insults being written instead of pro-active discussion that may lead to benifit us all.

Hey Mr Brightmove.co.uk. Why don't you leave off for a little while eh? Your inane comments on EVERY single story on EAT are really irritating to those trying to follow important debates. Your site is terrible and has no properties on it. Rather than spending 2 hours a day clogging up EAT with banality why don't you spend some money on web design and try to establish a proper portal.

Portals announcing renewals... that doesnt surprise me at all. It obvious they are expecting large and smaller agents alike to follow suit. Makes sense to me, i think especially amongst smaller agents, i think they would feel safer copying a decsion made and a brand such as Cluttons.
