Agents are beginning to recruit new staff, says a recruitment agency, but many are dithering as to whether to re-hire after slashing headcount in the last 18 months.

Joshua Rayner, managing director of Dove & Hawk, which handles recruitment for estate agents and letting agents in London and the home counties, told Estate Agent Today: “The last three months has seen a significant increase in estate agents employing across the board. February was the best month our own business had in a year.”

Rayner, a former estate agent himself, said many of his clients were worried that with summer coming up and staff going off on holiday, they could be stretched without enough cover should housing market activity continue to rise.

Rayner said: “Agents are now forced to make the decision, ‘Do we recruit now?’ or ‘Do we wait a few more months?’ As far as the market is concerned, the next six months will be crucial.”
