The latest figures from internet traffic analyst comScore show that Rightmove is continuing to maintain its domination in the property portal stakes.
The figures are also remarkable for showing that newcomer PropertyIndex has leapfrogged up the rankings ahead of Globrix, also for revealing the popularity of house price websites, and for highlighting the failure of private house sale websites to make a dent.
Only three agent-free specialist websites, Spare Room and Easyroommate and www.moveonin.com – which find tenants and roommates ¬– are listed.
The new comScore figures for the property websites in November show Rightmove easily in first place, followed by FindaProperty, Propertyfinder and Primelocation.
No surprises there, but mystifyingly, behind the top four most visited sites, comes an Australian portal, sister to Propertyfinder. This could suggest that an enormous number of Brits are interested in a new life down under, but other explanations are welcome.
However, it’s worth pointing out that in 17th place comes a website for Dubai property, and in 24th, an international portal.
In sixth place comes the first of the free listings sites, Nestoria, followed by Vebra, placed well above its consumer-facing portal, Thinkproperty.
Homes and Property, the London Evening Standard’s site, comes in at eight, followed by Trovit, a classified type of portal, whose name is nowhere near as well known as Fish4homes but which it beats into 22nd place.
Two house price websites follow, with Core’s HomesOnView in 12th place and another house price site, Zoopla, in 13th place. This is followed by UK Property Shop, which describes itself as the national directory of estate agents.
The biggest winner appears to be PropertyIndex, launched only last September, and which only two months later appears in 15th place, ahead of Globrix at 21.
PropertyIndec chief executive Lee Bramzell said he was delighted: “We’ve had an incredible response to our ‘no lead, no fee’ business approach, with over 4,500 UK estate agents joining.
“Industry insights such as the comScore figures are invaluable to new portals and will no doubt send a clear message to all estate agents and developers planning how best to market their properties for sale and rent in 2009.”
The top estate agents’ own-site is Foxtons, followed by Your Move

Very nice site!
Have any of you lot realised that its the same few of you with a misguided agenda that keep ranting about rightmove?
If you don't like them, leave, and let the rest of us mop up your business because you won't be around for long.
God you're boring!
Agent007.
No matter how much we hate paying for that RM site, we and all the other agetns despise it. however, one estate agent cannot take away the massive public image of rightmove. it will take a long time for these free sites to come through and if i said today on a valuation i use REMAX i would probably want to bury my head rather quickly.
The public want RM so what can we do ?
The numbers do not reflect agents spying on eachother as they are unique visits. With 15,000 or so agents in the UK if everyone went on from 10 different computers in the month the results will still be the same.
As for free portals they can't invest, their efforts are in selling peoples details, other advertising (not agents) and they can't increase their traffic!!!
LET ME HELP YOU COME OUT OF YOUR DREAM WORLD AS IT MIGHT SAVE YOUR BUSINESS...THEY DON'T WORK!!!
Totally agree with Rich, rightmove themselves quote that we should ignore 95% of hits on the basis that the click through rate should be 5%. (assuming you are a RM estate agency user you will know what I mean) Reason is they are aware that the 1000's of estate agents and other industry related business users spend hours clicking in and out of properties on rightmove thus pushing them to untouchable levels on user stats! There are so many alternatives out there, some free others cheaper, either way, surely if everyone came off on a deadline date then rightmove are finished over night on the basis of buyers logging on, finding few or no properties and they will simply search the next portal! yet we moan about the fee,s but continue to advertise! surley if enough people agree to come off they should come off, yet for all the quotes of 1000's will not renew or want to come off they dont! time to put up or shut up!
"highlighting the failure of private house sale websites to make a dent."
Er, isn't Houseladder at number 41 a Private Sale site?
There are only 3 estate agent firms in the list for that matter.
The majority of hits are other agents spying on their competitors.
Means nothing!
Looking at the interesting stats here - it seems to me that agents have a limited yet clear choice - either stick with the still dominant RM - or have to advertise on MANY of the smaller (far behind on popularity) sites. There is still only one website that sellers want to see their property on and, like it or not, that is RM.... what do others think?
Interestingly - the majority of Estate Agents also have their own web sites - many are very well designed and I am sure receive a great many hits. I have a strong feeling that 2009 will be the year of a move away from the expensive portals to the more cost effective sites. Many Estate Agents using only one expensive web site can spell only one thing - fewer Estate Agents!
