Summer style tips: How to prepare your home for the warmer months

While we hardly enjoy the daily temperatures of the Mediterranean here in the UK, we do sometimes get treated to a spot of sunshine.

And, as a nation, when it comes to the changing seasons we're rarely prepared, complaining that we feel too hot in the summer, and too cold in winter. But the good news is there's plenty we can do now to make the muggier days that bit more bearable. We recommend you

Throw those curtains wide

Any damp patches in your home you'd like to get shut of Landlords would suggest you let fresh air in as often as possible. So throw those curtains wide and open the windows as and when you're in the house to allow any damp a chance to dry out. It's also a great idea in general to let a little fresh air into the house; it'll help keep you cool and dry any washing you have hanging on clothes maids. Failing that, make use of your outdoor washing line instead. Try placing a house plant close to your bathroom sink, too, as this will help filter the air.

Overhaul your wardrobe

If you didn't give your home a good freshen up/tidy during March and April, why not complete a belated spring clean now in the form of a wardrobe overhaul Grab those cosy winter jumpers, big boots and winter trousers and vacuum pack them, before placing them in a spare room or somewhere out of the way. Reorganise your summer clothing so everything's to hand should we be treated to a barmy hot summer's day. Keep sunglasses and sun cream close by, too.

Choose a casual, linen sofa

That wool sofa may have been a good idea in the height of winter, but if it's proving too warm during the hotter months, why not throw a linen or cotton blanket over it If you've more cash to splash, check out the beautiful range of sofas online. A linen chesterfield sofa will prove a worthwhile investment for a room which gets a lot of sun, keeping you cool and offering a casual look all year round.

Freshen up guestrooms

Got guests coming to stay during the summer Ensure their bedroom for the weekend is fresh and clean by opening the windows as much as possible in the run up to their stay, and adding lighter, cooler bedding. A bunch of summery blooms placed on the bedside table will provide a pleasant welcome as well. You could also air out wardrobes, as well as find some time to fluff pillows and duvets by placing them in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet on air dry (no heat).

Give your dryer a rest

Where possible, give your dryer a rest if the weather's warmer. Hang bedding and summer clothes outside to dry to avoid a damp home, and leave dishes and other crockery to drip dry to save you time, too. Hand washing is also a good idea during the summer months, as clothes will dry out much quicker when hung out in the sun.
