How to prepare for weekend house guests

So you've settled into your brand new abode and you're probably more than ready to show it off to friends and family.

Your home may be spic and span and the mountain of cardboard boxes finally unpacked, but are there any small touches you've neglected to consider We've put together five top tips to ensure your weekend house guests have a memorable stay

1. Keep refreshments close at hand; leave a jug of ice cold water by the bed if your guests are arriving during the height of summer, or make them aware of where they'll find juice and light snacks should they fancy a bite to eat or sip of something refreshing.

2. You may think you've no room for a guest bed in your spare room-turned-home office. But have you considered a sofa bed Take a look online and you'll find a range of beautiful Chesterfield sofa beds, to ensure great style for you and good comfort for your guests. When not in use, you can push it into a corner for the kids to use as a handy reading nook. Or give it pride of place in your living or dining room. A sofa bed is ideal for those with small, one-bed apartments as it allows you to replace that tired old couch and enquire a brand new bed in the process - result!

3. Never underestimate the welcoming power of a well-placed bunch of fresh blooms, or a gorgeously scented candle. Add one to your guest room prior to your guests' arrival, to allow them to be met by a burst of fragrance when they enter their room for the weekend. Simple but oh so effective. You could also add a few plug-in fragrances to the home, which spray automatically to ensure your house is beautifully scented at all times. Ensure your house is at a good temperature, too - not too hot or too cold, and provide a remote control to air conditioning (if you have it) or access to radiator controls.

4. Place a wicker basket in the bathroom or by the bed, containing sample sizes of moisturisers, shower gels and shampoos - these can be saved and pulled out of old magazines. They're perfect for your weekend guests, as they offer more than enough product for a couple of days, they don't cost you anything extra and they help avoid the embarrassment of your guests asking to borrow your toothpaste, conditioner or other essentials.

5. Provide empty drawers, or a set of hangers for the wardrobe, should your guests want to hang a few items of clothing up. You could also let them know where any spare blankets or towels are kept. Another great tip is leaving a few magazines or up-to-date newspapers in a magazine rack close to the bed. That way, if your guests suffer from insomnia or wake up early, they have more than enough reading material to keep them entertained until you surface later on.
