A commercial drone operator claims to be the first and so far only commercial operator to be able to fly drones in built up areas with up to 10 metres from public and property.

One of the shortcomings associated with the use of drones for some estate agency work has been a limit on obtaining Civil Aviation Authority to fly above 400 feet and less than 50 metres from the public and property. This has effectively excluded the use of drones in many built up areas.

However BB Stratus - a firm whose drones have been used for filming TV shows such as The Fall as well as the making of corporate videos - now claims it is the first such company to be given built up' consent.

It now has a blanket permission to fly in built up areas and up to 10 metres away from the public and property, day or night, to a maximum height of 600 feet.

It remains to be seen whether this leads to similar permissions being granted to other firms but it may make this technology more attractive to the estate agency industry, which has so far been restricted by what it can use drones for - and by their cost.

Bl**dy liberty! Any drone that flying directly over my property will be in danger of being 'downed'.

    Hi Paul,
Great news that you have had permission to fly for a year! This permission is specific to flying aircraft over 7kg, as close as 10m from public and property in built-up areas and up to 600ft, without a CAA approved Safety Case you are allowed to fly as close as 50m away and up to 400ft in height- you can no longer apply for one off exemptions as of 12 Feb 15.
    Hope this helps.
Please do see copy of permission: http://www.bbstratus.com/permissions/
    And our press release: http://www.bbstratus.com/news/
    Regards,
    Carey

Hate to pour cold water on BB Stratus claims, but we at Peter Lane & Partners here in Cambridgeshire have had CAA accredited drone for a year and can provide our vendors with both aerial photography and a video 'fly past' of their village surroundings!
