An Exeter estate agency has come up with a bright - and green - idea to celebrate Christmas and make its signs stand out from the crowd during winter's darkest days.

The East of Exe agency, which sells and lets properties in Exeter and surrounding villages, has installed eco-friendly solar powered Christmas lights on its For Sale and To Let boards.

They charge during the day - even at this time of year when it's not completely bright - and then use the power to light up in the evening explains Ian Garcia, one of the partners behind the agency.

Our signs are already distinctive with a bold orange livery which makes them stand out from the many other agents' boards. Now the energy-efficient lights offer a sustainable way of marking Christmas and making our signs visible for sellers and buyers after dark he says.

East of Exe was set up in 2010 and has offices in central Exeter and Topsham. It prides itself on an innovative approach to sales and lettings and has been named one of the UK's top 20 small estate agencies by the Daily Telegraph.

Good to see some old fashioned scroogery from agents, although I, personally, can't really begrudge East of Exe their moment in the limelight...

Oh my god Ben David you miserable old farts. Its a bit of Christmas spirit, nothing more. How many agents stick for sale arrows on the side of a road 1/2 a mile away from the property being sold I hardly think a few environmentally friendly lights on a board are much cause for complaint.

Ben I believe you are correct, my first throught on reading the article. One may get away with this but is that the right attitude or should professional Estate Agents be leading examples of legal compliance

I have always believed that under the Town & Country Planning Act it was forbidden to illuminate boards
