Did anyone spot the bargain property on Rightmove last week?
Boasting one bedroom – but no central heating – the detached house in Hailsham, East Sussex, had an asking price of just £50.
Brilliantly marketed, the property – complete with great views, built-in fridge freezer and non-estate location – even featured on BBC and ITV local news programmes.
It was in fact an igloo, the work of estate agent Simon Marden. It took him and a couple of friends some four hours to construct in a field on Sunday, January 10.
“I was due to fly out to Spain on a skiing trip but, ironically, couldn’t get out of the town because of the snow – so I decided to while away the time by building it,” said Simon.
“The following day we had absolutely nothing to do work-wise – nothing was moving in the town at all – so we went and took some pictures, wrote some tongue-in-cheek copy and uploaded the details on to Rightmove.”
The igloo was auctioned for charity on eBay and sold for £30, which its creator matched with a further £30.
Meanwhile, a second igloo built in Dorking, Surrey, was the brainchild of estate agent Rachel Bignell of Cubitt & West.
Complete with lighting, it featured on Facebook as an opportunity to buy a ‘truly unique property’ with offers in the region of £1m.
Sadly, disaster struck before any offers came in. “The property has suffered severe subsidence and has now completely disappeared,” said Rachel.

Did this igloo have a built in freezer? Apparently many people were defrosting their freezers over the last icy spell by putting all their frozen food out on the ice. A good tip for all those stuck indoors in the snow today in the South West!
PeeBee....this is snow joke mate!!
Excellent idea.
Brilliant! Only one thing - what if someone reports them for having no HIP; no EPC? Will they be frozen out of the industry... ;0)
