Founder of successful 12-branch agency network dies

A veteran estate agent who set up his own business in one of Britain’s most popular locations is being mourned after dying at the age of 93.

Local media in Winchester say that Maurice Beale, a prominent figure in the local and regional business community in the 1970s and 1980s, set up Maurice Beale & Partners in 1964.

It was a force in the local agency industry for a quarter of a century before being absorbed into General Accident in 1988.

After qualifying as a chartered surveyor, Beale took up an overseas posting with the Colonial Service as a district surveyor in Uganda; after four years he was transferred to Ghana where he designed what was to become Independence Square in Accra.

He established Maurice Beale & Partners on his return from Africa, with his wife Cherry joining as bookkeeper.

The agency grew to 12 branches across Hampshire, before being sold to GA at the height of the late-1980s property boom.

After retiring from agency, Beale became involved in substantial numbers of local charities.

I can well remember competing with Maurice Beale (& Partners) whilst based in Winchester High Street. A very dapper gentleman who I can still picture walking down the hill from his office. The sale to GA never seemed to sit well with the company but there was no doubt that they picked up a very good firm - although the General Accident and Private Parts was hard to get rid of. RIP.
