Allsopp fights back after criticism of first time buyer comments

Location Location Location co-presenter Kirstie Allsopp has fought back after her comments on first time buyers were sharply criticised oil social media.

Allsopp suggested that more first time buyers may have to give up expensive coffees, Netflix and their gym subscriptions if they wanted to purchase a home - or even consider moving to a cheaper part of the country.

The comments, made by the presenter in The Times, were supported by Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake - the former chairman of Hunters, before it was sold to The Property Franchise Group last year for an undisclosed sum. On social media Hollinrake retweeted Allsopp’s story with the comment “Good advice.”

However, responses have been largely critical of the suggestions made by the presenter.

Dan Wilson Craw, deputy director of campaign group Generation Rent, wrote on Twitter: “Your average 10 per cent deposit increased by £2,450 in the past year. Don't worry though, just cancel your Netflix subscription for the next 20 years and 5 months, and you'll be back on track”

Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington tweeted: “In 2020, the average first-time buyer deposit in the UK was about £57,300. And: Allsopp is the daughter of Charles Allsopp, 6th Baron Hindlip, a former chairman of Christie’s.”

Allsopp has fought back on Twitter by saying: “If it bleeds it leads. Newspapers create stories which will generate clicks. Most of the headlines are bullshit, yet if it feeds into our prejudices we fall for them, greedily gobbling up the fodder and filling the coffers of Murdoch et al.”

Her other tweets made yesterday included “Anyhow [anyone] who thinks I have spent the last 22 years pretending to understand the needs of British homebuyers must think me a very good actress indeed. If you don’t like the shows don’t watch them. But I’m beyond caring what the press or social media think about me, life is too short.”

And this one: “If you don’t like me do tell Channel4, though the best way to put an end to me is not to watch the shows. We’re filming the Christmas Show on Friday, maybe by the time it comes out in December it will have 0 viewers. You’ve got 9 months to achieve that. Ready, steady go..”

With the risk of upsetting every woke, bleeding heart liberal on here, Kirsty you are spot on. In a few years time these poor ole first time buyers will turn into the usual greedy vendor.

    ditto
Kirsty isn't saying giving up those things will earn you a deposit. If the people who regularly buy those and other 'must-haves' don't already have any savings of their own then they only have themselves to blame.
