Appetite for home ownership proven by Help To Buy claims Jenrick

Over 55,000 households bought homes through the government’s Help to Buy equity loan scheme in the past financial year - a record.

In the 12 months to the end of March, 55,649 homes were bought using Help to Buy equity loans, with a total of 328,506 purchased through the scheme since it began in 2013.

To date, over £20 billion has been lent to purchasers.

A total of 15,341 homes were bought using Help to Buy loans between January and March 2021 alone, up 61 per cent from the same quarter of 2020.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick says: “Over 55,000 households bought their home with the support of Help to Buy Equity Loan last year: a record for the scheme, which is helping young people and first-time buyers feel the sense of pride and achievement that comes with owning your own home.”

The government claims the figures show that “the appetite for home ownership remains high across the country with the government committed to supporting first-time buyers and hard-working families into home ownership.”

How many of those homes have cladding or fire safety issues, or building issues that means the new owners are trapped? Giving huge amount of tax payers money as surety for lending on property that can not be sold on is not such a great idea - hopefully in November if the government gives a new steer of fire regulations, surveyors can go down a different route, rather than confining tens of thousands of home buyers to huge crippling bills and years of being unable to move, re-mortgage. As a basic should any home not be 100% safe to live in, especially if it is a new home.
