Propertymark’s names non-execs from outside property world

Propertymark has named two new non-executive directors described as having “a wealth of knowledge and independence.”

A statement says their appointments “will expand and complement the specialist skill set of the current board, which is predominately made up of industry practitioners.”

Paul Hemsley will chair the organisation’s Audit and Risk Committee. He is described as having “a Chief Financial Officer background in listed, public and private sector organisations” having trained as a chartered accountant.

Hemsley says: “I’m really pleased to have been given the opportunity to join the Propertymark Board, especially given all the upcoming improvements on the horizon. I am also looking forward to adding some extra insight into the Audit and Risk Committee.”

Karen McArthur - who Propertymark calls “well-experienced and values driven” - will chair a new Nominations and Remuneration Committee.

Her current roles include Chair of The Waterway Ombudsman, Independent Commissioner at the Direct Marketing Commission and lay member roles with professional regulators.

She comments: “Propertymark is a respected and growing organisation and I’m excited to be part of its journey. I’m looking forward to getting my feet under the table and working with the Board to deliver more value for members.”

What is it the obsession with bringing expertise ‘from outside the property world’, it’s just virtue signalling BS…put some people on the board who won’t challenge the status quo in any meaningful way because they aren’t able to give their opinion in any forceable manner because they don’t know the industry!

I (personally) have had enough of clueless non-execs with naive ideas about how to revolutionise what we do, sounding off and achieving nothing and simply being an instrument of keeping things the same and the vested interests happy.

I’m all behind the idea that you aren’t going to have turkeys voting for Christmas, but the solution is that we need more non-agents being appointed onto these positions not people outside of property. There are a wealth of non-agency people that work in property that can see the dysfunctions of the agency model and the change that is required, who aren’t given a voice. IT directors, Finance directors, HR directors, marketing directors, journalists even (god forbid!) within Property often with decades of experience that know how the industry works and have a perspective free of the vested interest and the status quo. A few of those individuals on industry boards could transform the industry…for the better!
